Named by Samuel de Champlain, a
Frenchman, meaning "green mountain," and nicknamed The
Green Mountain State. Vermont is bordered by Canada to the north; New York to the west;
New Hampshire to
the east and Massachusetts to the south.
Vermont's highest peak is Mount Mansfield at 4,393, the 28th highest in the United States. The lowest point is Lake Champlain, 95 feet below sea level.
