Named from the Cherokee villages named "Tanasi," and nicknamed The Volunteer State. Tennessee is bordered by Kentucky to the north; Missouri and Arkansas to the west; Virginia and North Carolina to the east and Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia to the south. 

Tennessee's highest peak is Clingmans Dome at 6,643 feet, the 17th highest in the United States. The lowest point is along the shore of the Mississippi River, which is 182 feet above sea level.
