Named by Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano for the Greek island of Rhodes; founded by Roger Williams, a clergyman; and nicknamed The Ocean State. Rhode Island is bordered by Massachusetts to the north; Connecticut to the west; and the Atlantic Ocean to the east and to the south. 

Rhode Island's highest peak is Jerimoth Hill, at 812 feet, the 46th highest in the United States. The lowest point is the Atlantic Ocean, at sea level.
