Named from the Sioux Indian word for
"friend," and nicknamed The Peace Garden State. North Dakota is bordered by
Canada to the north; Minnesota to the east; Montana to
the west and South Dakota to the south.
North Dakota's highest peak is White Butte at 3,506 feet, the 30th highest in the United States. The lowest point is at Red River, which is 750 feet above sea level.
