Named for Charles II, and nicknamed The
Tar Heel State. North Carolina is bordered by Virginia to the north;
Tennessee to the west; the Atlantic Ocean to
the east and Georgia and South Carolina to the south.
North Carolina's highest peak is Mount Mitchell, at 6,684 feet, the 16th highest in the United States. The lowest point is the Atlantic Ocean at sea level.
