Named from the Chippewa word "Mici zibi,"  meaning "great river," and nicknamed The Magnolia State. Mississippi is bordered by Tennessee to the north; Alabama to the east; Arkansas and Louisiana to the west; and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. 

Mississippi's highest peak is Woodall Mountain at 806 feet, the 47th highest in the United States. The lowest point is along the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, which is right at sea level.
