Named from the Chippewa word "Meicigama"
meaning "great water," referring to the Great Lakes and nicknamed The
Wolverine State. Michigan is bordered by Wisconsin to the south and west;
Surrounded by three Great Lakes to the north and west; and Indiana and
Illinois to the south.
Michigan's highest peak is Mt. Arvon at 1,980 feet, the 38th highest in the United States. The lowest point is along the shore of Lake Erie, which is 572 feet above sea level.
