Named for the Massachusett tribe, with a meaning of "large hill place," and nicknamed The Bay State. Massachusetts is bordered by Vermont and New Hampshire to the north; New York to the west; The Atlantic Ocean to the east and Connecticut and Rhode Island to the south. 

Massachusetts's highest peak is Mount Greylock at 3,491 feet, the 31st highest in the United States. The lowest point is the Atlantic Ocean at sea level.
