Leif Erikkson, a Viking explorer, was the first European to set foot on now what is Maine, possibly named after a region of France, and nicknamed The Pine Tree State. Maine is bordered by Quebec to the north and west; New Brunswick to the north and east; New Hampshire to the west; and the Atlantic Ocean to the south.

Maine's highest peak is Mount Katahdin at 5,280 feet, the 22nd highest in the United States. The lowest point is the Atlantic Ocean at sea level.
