Named from the Algonquin Indian word
meaning "warriors," and nicknamed The Prairie State. Illinois is bordered by
Wisconsin to the north; Iowa and Missouri to the west; Indiana to
the east and Kentucky to the south.
Illinois's highest peak is Charles Mound at 1,235 feet, the 45th highest in the United States. The lowest point is along the shore of the Mississippi River, which is 279 feet above sea level.
