Named for a fictional place called, "Califia" in a book by Montalvo in 1510, and nicknamed Golden State. California is located off of the Pacific Ocean  to the west; Oregon to the north; Nevada and Arizona to the east and Mexico to the south.

California's highest peak is Mount Whitney at 14,494 feet, the 2nd highest in the United States. The lowest point is at Death Valley 282 feet below sea level.
