Named for an Eskimo word "alakshak,"
meaning great land, and nicknamed the Last Frontier. Alaska is located off
of the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Alaska to the south; the Bering Sea to the west; The
Arctic Ocean to the north and British Columbia, and Yukon, Canada to the east.
Alaska's highest peak is Mount McKinley at 20,320 feet, the highest in the United States. The lowest point is at the Pacific Ocean at sea level.
