Named from the Creek word meaning "tribal
town," and nicknamed The Yellowhammer State. Alabama is bordered by
Tennessee to the north; Mississippi to the west; Georgia to
the east and Florida, as well as the Gulf of Mexico to the south.
Alabama's highest peak is Cheaha Mountain at 2,407 feet, the 35th highest in the United States. The lowest point is along the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, which is right at sea level.
